A Home Decorator's Guide to Wood

Wood floors, windows or furniture often transform a space. This article discusses four common types of wood and describes how they are used in home decorating.

Wood can be compared to paint. The color of the wood you choose either for your furniture, floors, or window treatment can set the tone of the room as much as paint can. Remember the stain of the wood is as important as the type of wood. Some manufacturers may stain wood to look like a different type of wood because of costs and durability.

The following types of wood are commonly used in home decorating:

Cherry

Cherry wood is often brown mixed with red, which produces a deep rich color. It's considered a hardwood. The shades of red can vary. This type of wood has recently become popular as people moved towards a contemporary/casual style for their homes. It can be paired with other types of wood, such as pine.

Mahogany

Mahogany is somewhat similar to cherry in color. It's often dark brown with a red tint to it. Some manufacturers make products that are called black mahogany, which has deeper brown tint mixed with black as well. Mahogany is another wood that has gained popularity as there is a shift in design towards contemporary/casual style.

Oak

Unlike cherry, oak is often light brown. The pale color allows the grain in the wood to be exposed. It's also considered a hardwood. Oak is gradually losing its popularity to darker woods such as cherry, but it remains a staple in country décor. The lightness of the color provides the warmth many country homes seek. There are also variants of oak, such as red oak and white oak. Red oak is slightly pink-red while white oak has a slight greenish cast.

Pine

Pine has a warm yellow color. Like oak, the grain and nooks in the wood are visible. It is also often used in country design. Since this wood has such a light color, it often looks best in rooms that have a lot of light. It may also be good for children's rooms because it can make them feel warm and inviting. Unlike the other woods, pine is considered a softwood. Pine also takes well to stain and paint, so you can change it to match the décor of your home when it changes.

These four types of wood are the most common types of wood used for furniture and flooring.
