An Introduction to Landscaping

This article discusses important questions you should ask yourself when thinking about landscaping - such as style, budget, plants and labor.

When it comes to the appearance of your home, one feature that you may want to consider enhancing is the landscaping. Landscaping doesn't necessarily have to be intensive or costly, but it should be presentable. Here are some things to consider when you're thinking about landscaping your home.

What kind of a home do you own?

The style of your house will often offset the type of landscape that you may want. If you have an Italian theme, you may want to have slender trees rather than bulky trees. If you have a Santa Fe theme, you may want to have some beautiful flowering cacti. Another factor that will affect your landscape decisions is the size of your property. For instance, if you have a few acres of land you may want a variety of trees on your property. If you own a home in a track home development then you may want to just have some simple rose bushes.

Before you begin planning the landscape design, you may want to determine whether there are any regulations in your homeowner association's handbook that you must abide by. Checking these regulations beforehand may help you save some time, ensuring that you know immediately what you can and cannot do. You don't want to become excited about an idea and later realize that you can't do it.

What is your budget?

You may think all you need is some new grass to liven up your landscaping, so you won't really need to set budget. You're probably thinking, 'How much could grass really cost?'

In reality, there are a variety of different grasses that vary in price. There's also the cost for the bags of topsoil you may need for this project as well and event the price of topsoil can vary. There are also tools you may need to purchase if you don't already have them. Beyond these basic supplies, you may also be paying for labor if you don't think you can or you don't want to tending to the project yourself.

You should certainly consider these expenses when planning your landscape. By setting a budget early, you may be able to maintain better control over your project. It may also help you maintain your initial vision without getting swept up in the gimmicks of the industry.

What type of plants do you want?

Do you want plants that only bloom or have foliage during a certain season? Or would you rather have plants that bloom all year long? The types of plants that you decide to incorporate into your landscape greatly affect the cost of your project.

Another factor that you may want to consider when choosing plants is how much care is required. If you're a gardener or have an experienced gardener, this question may not be as important. If you're a beginner and you want to take care of your own plants, you may want to make sure you know what type of work is in store. Planting, after all, is only the beginning.

Will you be hiring a landscaper or doing the work yourself?

Plants and supplies aren't the only things that can affect your budget. You may also be thinking about hiring a professional landscaper to help with your project. If you're hiring a professional landscaper, you may want to ask your friends if they can recommend any landscaping professionals.

When you've narrowed your choices to a few landscapers, you may also want to check the Better Business Bureau to see if they have had any complaints filed against them in the past few months and to see what type of a rating they have. Since your landscaping project may be costly, you may want to make sure that you're working with someone you can trust, especially considering that your home is an investment.

If you're doing the work yourself, you may want to look at a few landscaping instruction books which are available at your local bookstore. You may also want to ask friends who have done landscaping before for tips.

When landscaping, you should be prepared to do some hard work and have a lot of patience. Doing the work yourself may be economically beneficial because you'll be saving on labor costs, but you may want to factor in how time consuming it may be.
