Bathroom Upgrades - Sinks, Lighting and Mirrors

The following article offers some tips to upgrading the sink, lighting and mirros in your bathroom. There are many types of upgrades available to match individual designs and tastes.

Here are some ways to add some pizazz to your bathroom.

The Bathroom Sink

The elegant bathroom you're designing will definitely need two sinks. These can be installed on a long countertop, in or on a beautiful cabinet or as two seperate pedistal sinks. Double sinks should be installed far enough apart that each person can use their sink without hitting elbows.

Some new bathroom designs include placing the sinks in front of a window to take advantage of the view and natural light. A framed mirror will then be mounted on another wall.

If you have sufficient floor space you could choose two pedestal sinks in contemporary or traditional styles. Pedestal sinks will make the room look more open but they will not provide storage space - so be sure to have other storage options in mind!

Another popular sink design is installing a drop-in or hand-painted sink in a free-standing chest or cabinet that looks like a separate piece of furniture. A custom-designed sink can also be installed in a solid-surface or marble countertop for an elegant look. One of the newest looks for bathroom sinks is a sink that looks like a large bowl sitting on top of the bathroom counter. These bowls can be made of many types of materials, including marble, hand-blown glass or metal. If you're considering a sink with this design, you need to be sure the height will be convenient for you to use and that the bowl will be durable and safe.

Lighting

It's time to get rid of that yellowed fan/heater/overhead light that's in the middle of your bathroom.

Lighting for a redesigned bathroom should be directed more at work areas. Softer light for the bath area can be achieved by using a wall dimmer switch. Wall sconces can be placed on above or on either side of a mirror, a small table lamp can be placed on the dressing table or counter area or you can even install a chandelier for a truly dramatic bathroom statement.

You need to run all lighting plans past an electrician or lighting designer - any new wiring needs to be installed behind the walls so no wires or cords are exposed. You should also have ground fault circuit interrupters installed on every bathroom outlet.

Mirrors

You can replace your large frameless sink mirror with a beautiful framed one. Homeowners can either find an existing framed mirror to install, or build a frame to put around the existing mirror. Frame molding comes in a variety of styles to complement any decor.
