Do-It-Yourself Landscaping

Landscaping is a great activity for the do-it-yourselfer. It can be easy and rewarding and gives the homeowner the option to save alot of money while making an investment.

Landscaping your yard without the help of a landscaper can be a very rewarding, enjoyable experience for the do-it-yourselfer. Before beginning, the homeowner should follow this checklist:

  • Envision how you want the yard to look.
  • Don't try to take on more than you can handle.
  • Determine how the sun falls on the yard and keep in mind the how the climate changes can affect your yard.
  • Know where your septic tank, underground pipes and cables are located.
  • Check overhead wiring and possible tree growth.
  • Observe how water falls, drains or collects in the yard.
  • Make a scale drawing on graph paper.
  • Determine whether any eyesores in the yard should be covered with greenery or shrubbery.
  • Take advantages of the views your yard has and keep privacy in mind.
  • Let the style of your house dictate the style of your yard/garden.
  • Don't hesitate to hire professionals for big jobs that are unmanageable for the do-it-yourselver.
  • Check out other yards and gardens to give yourself ideas.
  • Don't rush the project! Working too quickly can leave the homeowner with less than satisfactory results.

Do-it-yourself landscaping is an excellent way to increase the value of your home while saving money at the same time. It is crucial to primarily develop a plan, but do not be afraid to deviate from the original plan. It is normal for the original plan to evolve but try not to give into whims; calculated plans and action will ensure landscaping success.
