Flooring Basics: Tile

This article discusses tile flooring basics, such as its cost and benefits or downfalls.

The popularity of tile has increased in recent years. Once used for only bathrooms and kitchens, tile is now being used throughout the home. Many homeowners use elegant tile, such as marble tiling, for small areas such as foyers and bathrooms while using ceramic tile in other living spaces.

Tile Costs

Tile comes in a variety of colors and sizes. The over all cost of a project is partly determined by the cost of the individual tiles.

Tile Benefits and Determents

Because the surface of tile is easy to clean, it works well in homes that have children and pets. Some homeowners may find it difficult to maintain the grout that is in between the tiles and they are less stain resistant. You could clean the grout with a cleaning solution, or choose a dark colored grout in order to hide some of the dirt.

Another drawback of tiling is overall comfort. Unlike carpeting, there isn't any type of padding underneath the tiles. This type of flooring isn't recommended for seniors because the surface can become slippery.
