Many may be surprised to hear that the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that crime is actually falling. In fact, 2003 reports shows crime was the lowest it had been since the data was first gathered in the 1970s. While there are several reasons for such a decline, heightened safety awareness and a surge in home security services may have contributed.

While the overall crime rate may be dropping, more than 5 million burglaries still occur annually in the United States. Many of these burglaries are not forced entry, meaning burglars simply opened unlocked doors or shimmied locks that were not reinforced. Someone who makes a point to protect themselves can prevent such crime. Crime prevention can drastically reduce the odds that one's home will be burglarized or that one will be attacked while at home. There are several ways to go about protecting one's valuables and person.

Home Security Systems

Home security systems are one way to prevent burglary or attack. These systems have become increasing more sophisticated, resulting in greater efficiency and fewer false alarms. These alarms are usually triggered when someone enters a home through a door or window without entering the proper code into the security panel within a certain period of time. Many of these systems monitor for other potential threats, such as fire or high amounts of carbon monoxide in the air. While some are silent, others transmit a loud ringing to deter further entry or inform the resident of a problem. Once triggered, police departments or private security vehicles will be dispatched to the scene.

Self Protection

While home security systems are helpful in preventing burglary or attack, there are a number of ways one can prevent such crime on one's own. You can, for instance, carry mace or other protective tools. You can also set timed lights while away to both make a home appear occupied and to ensure one never has to return to a dark home.

If you are particularly concerned, you can either organize or participate in a neighborhood watch program. These programs are run by concerned neighbors who take shifts monitoring the neighborhood and reporting any suspicious activity in the area. Such programs, if well-maintained, can be quite successful in deterring criminals, particularly when warning signs are placed throughout the area.

While it is true that the number of burglaries and violent crimes committed in the United States has decreased in the last few years, you should never take your safety for granted. While investing in an advanced home security system may be helpful, it is often expensive to establish and maintain. Remaining cautious and taking steps to protect yourself, whether at home or away, may reduce the odds that you will become a victim of crime.
