Hot in 2007 and Outlook for 2008: Kitchen Countertops

Granite countertops have been king for the past several years, but they have had major competition in 2007. Read here about the latest kitchen countertop trends and what you may expect in the future.

News alert for 2007 - the long rule of granite as the most popular kitchen countertop material may be coming to an end. Homeowners still love the look of granite countertops, but they are looking for options that require less maintenance, hence the rise of quartz and engineered stone. Quartz and engineered stone countertop products provide the same look as granite, but without the high cost and maintenance needs. New designs in 2007 make it almost impossible to tell the difference between the three products. Granite is still a popular design choice, and will continue to be so in 2008, but it now has stiff competition. Watch for natural and engineered stones to remain extremely popular in 2008 and for homeowners to choose bolder stone colors. The countertop is a main focal point in the kitchen, so homeowners want theirs to figure prominently in any kitchen design.

Another area where there has been big changes is that of laminate countertops. There are now high-end laminate products available that look and feel like natural stone. These countertops are a great option for homeowners on tight budgets or who really enjoy the durability and versatility of laminate. In 2008, laminate will continue to grow in popularity as manufacturers release new patterns and textures that mimic all of the high-end stone products, yet at a fraction of the cost.
