How To Glaze Your Kitchen Cabinets

Every kitchen needs its own character and adding a glazing technique can differentiate your cabinets from all the others. In general, glazing is easy and only takes a few hours to apply.

Glazing your new or old kitchen cabinets can add character and rustic style. It is a do-it-yourself procedure that can be done as a weekend project. There are no special techniques or skills involved - all you need to do is take time to create your own style.

Most home improvement stores carry glaze paints, but making your own is easily done. Simply mix equal parts of latex-based paint and water. Oil-based paints can also be used by mixing three parts solvent to one part paint.

Applying Glaze to Cabinets

Remember not to make this process too complicated - simply wipe off the glaze if you don't like what you see. It is normal to have slight variations between cabinets. Raised-style cabinets should give you more depth while flush ones may not look as profound.

Steps:

  • Cover areas that may be prone to messy drips and tape off walls to avoid accidental application to those areas.
  • When using oil-based paint or stains, use a brush that will not expand (i.e., natural bristles). This will help you get a cleaner finish.
  • When you're ready to apply the glaze to the cabinets, remember to always go with the grain. Don't worry if the glaze gets in between the ridges, this is normal and will add to the unique effect.
  • After you're satisfied with each cabinet, wipe down any excess to allow for uniformity and to prevent cabinets from being too tacky.
  • Cabinets vary, but it usually takes at least ten hours for glaze to completely dry.
