Kitchen Remodeling Blunders and How to Avoid Them!

Thinking about nailing your kitchen remodeling project on your own? If so, kudos to you! You'll save yourself a pretty chunk of change! As an amateur, however, you'll also be prone to making a few mistakes seasoned professionals have learned to avoid. Here are a few common kitchen remodeling blunders to avoid.

Thinking about remodeling your own kitchen? Kudos! You'll save a tremendous amount of money and have more control over the final design. Unfortunately, as an amateur, you'll also be vulnerable to a few costly mistakes. Here are just a few ones to avoid!

  • Always properly measure for appliances! Not just width, think height and depth too. A refrigerator or stove that's flush with your cabinetry or other features will create a completely put-together look. It also ensures everything truly fits the way it should.
  • Evaluate cabinet strength, inside and out. Drawers shouldn't wiggle and shelves shouldn't bust. Think about how much weight you'll be putting on a piece of cabinetry before you install it to be certain its appropriate for your lifestyle. If not, consider stronger materials and well-engineered tracks!
  • Take tile and paint samples home with you. Just like clothes in a department store, things just look different when they get home. Among other factors, lighting can play a dramatic role in the final product. Remember to really live with it! If you drink coffee or wine, spill some on the sample and see how easy it is to clean. Ensure that the material truly works with your lifestyle.
  • Always buy more than you need. Whether you're buying tile, paint or carpet, buy what is called 'attic stock.' Buying extra and stashing it away will ensure you have a perfect match should anything become damaged or otherwise ruined down the line.
  • Functionality first. Whether you're picking out a refrigerator or installing new cabinets, don't go for a cool look if you won't use it. Think outside the box and install things you'll use, but rarely see in other homes. Like to cook a lot using all your counters? Why not install a second mini-sink in your food prep workstation? Stock up on meat? Consider buying accommodating a second freezer in your design.

Even if you're taking on the project yourself, consult with a professional. They can tell you what's hot and how to get it without breaking the bank. They can also remind you of things you might overlook, like certain useful organizational tools or engineering blunders.
