Satellite TV Vs Cable: Comparison of Dish Network Vs. Cable Television

Cable and satellite TV companies are battling for subscribers by offering different cost-saving promotions. How do these television providers stack up against each other? What are the real differences that will affect homeowners?

Cost

One of the most significant differences between cable TV and satellite TV are the costs. Many homeowners find that they are able to get more channels or services from satellite television providers and pay less than they would with cable television companies. According to Matthew Torres of About.com, www.about.com, satellite TV companies can charge less because they don't have to pay taxes to local governments and they have less overhead costs.

Channels

Cable and satellite television companies offer many of the same channels. They have the same extended channels and movie channels. However, cable companies have local television channels without charging the subscriber an additional fee, while satellite television companies offer international channels. With international channels, subscribers can watch news reports and entertainment shows from their native country. These international channels are additional, so there is an extra charge for them. Some satellite TV companies do charge subscribers an additional fee for local channels.

Equipment

In order to receive cable or satellite TV, subscribers have different equipment needs. For example, most homeowners who want cable television will not need any additional equipment as the cable lines are already installed in the residency. If the cable subscribers want DVR, a recorder is available for purchase from the cable company. Those homeowners who want satellite TV must purchase a satellite and receiver. They must also take care of the satellite by cleaning it if leaves or other debris should fall into it. When installing it, homeowners must make sure it is installed facing the correct location in order to receive a good signal.
