Sliding Window: Overview of the Different Types of Sliding Windows

Sliding windows are some of the most commonly found windows in homes. Read this article to learn the difference between horizontal sliding windows and vertical sliding windows.

What are Horizontal Sliding Windows?

Horizontal sliding windows are one of the most common types of windows found in homes. These windows can be made of two or more rectangular windows placed horizontally together. To open or close the window, all you have to do is slide the window right or left.

Many homeowners enjoy these windows because of the unobstructed views that they provide. It is also easy to find window treatments for these windows. The cost of horizontal sliding windows depends on the size, number of window panes, and energy efficiency. The costs can range as low as $80 to upwards of $200. (These costs do not include the costs of installation.)

What are Vertical Sliding Windows?

Vertical sliding windows are made of two window panes that rest on each other vertically. To open it and close the window, all you have to do is slide the window up and down.

There are two different types of vertical sliding windows: single hung and double hung. They both share the same design, but how they open differs. With a single hung window, only the bottom window panel is able to open. On the other hand, homeowners who have double hung windows can choose to open the bottom window panel or the top window panel. Many homeowners who have small children and pets prefer the double hung windows because the top panel is unreachable by children and pets.

The costs of these windows vary depending on the vendor. Usually, the costs for vertical sliding windows can range between $100 and $200.

Why Choose Sliding Windows?

Many homeowners choose sliding windows because they are an affordable option. To save even more money, homeowners can install the windows themselves. Some sliding windows come with installation kits to help make installation easier. After they are installed, another reason why homeowners choose to have sliding windows is that they're easy to maintain.
