Turn Your Bathroom Into A Feng Shui Oasis

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of positioning objects, furniture and even buildings based on the patterns of yin and yang and the flow of chi for positive and negative effects. Your bathroom is a great place to experiment with Feng Shui techniques.

Creating a Feng Shui Bathroom

  • The first and most important step in practicing Feng Shui is performing a Space Clearing procedure. Every environment has accumulated negative energy, or 'sha chi', that needs to be eliminated and this ritual clearing will make all other cures more effective.
  • Bathrooms have a profoundly draining effect on healthy 'chi' in the home. For this reason it is important to always keep bathroom doors closed. Also keep toilet lids closed whenever they are not in use.
  • If you have a window in your bathroom, open it daily. Allow sunlight to stream into the room as much as possible. Fresh air and sunlight are the best defenses against mold, and stale sha chi. Slatted blinds are great for providing privacy while still letting in natural light.
  • Bathrooms with no windows are very problematic in feng shui because it is difficult to avoid a build up of stagnant sha chi. If this is the case, be sure to supply bright, even lighting and install a quiet exhaust fan to use on a daily basis. Hanging a wind chime or faceted crystal in an appropriate place in the room will also help to move and disperse energy.
  • Use mirrors in the bathroom to speed up the flow of chi and to give a spacious feeling to a small room. Never place mirrors where they reflect into each other. Chi becomes trapped between them and cannot circulate.
  • Healthy, leafy plants are great in the bathroom since they help to absorb moisture and minimize the problem of stagnant chi. Lucky Bamboo is a good choice in bathrooms with limited light. If natural light is a concern, install full spectrum bulbs.
