What Is a Jalousie Window?

While many building codes no longer allow jalousie windows, a number still remain in use. This brief article discusses what jalousie windows are and how they work.

Jalousie windows are used less frequently than most other styles of windows. Composed of glass louvers that overlap one another to form the pane, jalousie windows are operated with a crank or a turn-screw. The glass louvers tilt open to allow air flow.

According to Energy Right, tva.apogee.net, the main benefits of jalousie windows include the fact that they do not obstruct one's view and allow for tremendous ventilation. A whole wall of jalousie windows could be opened to allow for breezes, making the interior of your home feel more like the outdoors. This ventilation comes with a drawback, however, as this slatted design makes these windows almost impossible to seal. Because they are not energy efficient and may be a security risk, jalousie windows are no longer permitted by many building codes.
