What Is a Tempered Glass Window?

This brief summary discusses tempered glass and its characteristics.

Tempered glass is a type of safety glass. While it is typically stronger than other types of glass to prevent shattering, it crumbles into tiny pieces when broken, preventing injury. This is particularly helpful during hurricanes or tornados when large shards of sharp glass could cause serious injury or death.

Most doors and low-silled widows are made of tempered glass, as are fish aquariums. While tempered glass is safer than other main-stream products, it is certainly not bullet or shatter-proof and should not be installed as such.

If you are looking for new windows or doors, you may want to make sure they are constructed with tempered glass, especially if you live in an area that has frequent storms.
