Video Overview: Carpet Durability

  1. Carpet Wear
    • Contrary to common belief, carpet does not wear out. Instead it can just become outdated (or uglied out) losing it's appearance retention.
    • Carpet can look worn though due to traffic patterns and not cleaning or caring for the carpet. Carpet durability is also related to how well the carpet can disguise things like dirt and traffic patterns.
  1. Choosing Durable Carpet
    • Some carpet styles hide traffic and dirt better than others. For example, the texture, color and patterns in a frieze carpet are very good at hiding traffic marks and usage.
    • Cut pile carpets are not very good at hiding traffic patterns since the tips bend and reflect light differently. High sheen cut pile carpets have a beautiful, silky look but will show all vacuum marks, traffic patterns and dirt.
  1. Carpet Finish
    • Low-luster carpets will show less marks than high luster, since high luster carpets reflect a lot of light.
    • Carpet weight does have some to do with wearability, but not as much as the carpet finish. For example a 60 oz. high sheen carpet can look worn quicker than a low luster 40 oz carpet.
  1. Stainmaster
    • Most carpets are manufactured with a Stainmaster application.
    • Stainmaster improves the overall appearance of the carpet by resisting stains and spills and makes it easy to remove soil and dirt with a vacuum.
