  1. Hardness Ratings
    • The hardness of a piece of hardwood flooring is directly related to how long it will last and how long it will look good.
    • The hardness, or density, level of hard woods are documented in a hardness chart. Oak is considered standard, as it is in the middle of the chart.
    • Brazilian cherry is at the top of the chart, meaning it has twice the density as oak, it can resist dings, dents and scratching twice as much as oak. American Cherry is at the bottom of the chart with half the density of oak.
  1. Texture
    • The texture and stain color of hardwood can hide or highlight dents and imperfections in hardwood flooring.
    • Hardwoods with more texture and less shine show less traffic marks, indentations and scratching. In comparison a reflective, high gloss finish shows all wear marks.
