Video Overview: Hardwood Flooring Pricing Factors

  1. Wood Species
    • Wood is a commodity, so the less there is of it, the more expensive it is. The price of hardwood can also fluctuate depending on current events and disasters.
    • Each species is slightly different in cost due to the availability and shipping price. for example, since Brazilian cherry is imported and must be shipped to the United States, it is more expensive than oak that is manufactured in the U.S.
  1. Style Factors
    • There are several style choices that can effect the price of hardwood. For example, narrow boards are less expensive than wider boards. Wider cuts mean there are less boards made out of a single tree and there is more waste.
    • Square edges are also more expensive than beveled edges. Manufacturers must be very precise when cutting boards for square edges - the must all be perfectly straight, even and the same width and height. Beveled cuts are more relaxed since the boards do not fit tight against each other.
