  1. Types of Hardwood Flooring
    • There are two types of hardwood flooring: prefinished hardwood and finished on-site hardwood.
    • Prefinished hardwood is the most popular type because it is ready to install - no sanding or finishing needed. It can be installed in sections and homeowners do not need to evacuate their home for installation.
  1. Prefinished Hardwood Flooring Products
    • Solid hardwood flooring is made of 3/4 inch wood must be installed over a sub-floor.
    • Engineered hardwood flooring consists of a thin layer of wood attached to a layer of plywood. Because of the plywood backing, engineered hardwood flooring can be installed over existing flooring or on concrete.
  1. Hardwood Flooring Styles and Features
    • Hardwood floors, whether prefinished or unfinished can have a wide variety of styles and appearances to suit remodeling need.
    • Hardwood flooring is available in either beveled or square edge designs. Beveled planks have small groves between them while square edge planks fit tight together for a smooth finish.
    • Homeowners will choose between narrow and wide planks. The correct width depends on the size of a room, as narrow planks look better in small rooms.
    • Hardwoodflooring may be high-gloss or low luster. High-gloss finishes are a shiny, furniture like finish while low-luster will hid imperfections and scratches.
    • Hardwood floors can be sealed in their natural color or stained for a different colored finish.
    • A textured, or rustic, finish adds dimension and hides dirt and imperfection, while a smooth finish is a much more finished appearance.
