1. Comparing Quotes and Warranties

  • It is a good idea to get a few quotes from different contractors. The lowest price, however, may not always be the best.
  • Make sure you compare the same product lines and compare warranties on products.
    • Warranties do vary. For example, one warranty may cover glass breakage or screen damage while another may not.
  • The warranty only lasts if the manufacturer stays in business. Check to make sure that the manufacturer has a long history.

2. Things To Look At When Looking To Hire A Contractor

  • Check to make sure the contractor is licensed and bonded. You can check with the Contractors License Board to make sure his licenses are current.
  • Does the contractor use his own workers or does he use subcontractors? Subcontractors are less likely to be available down the road if something happens and you need repairs.
  • Look for a contractor that is established and has been in business a long time.

3. Things To Watch Out For When Looking To Hire A Contractor

  • Watch out for the contractor with little or no history who gives you the lowest estimate. If he's not local, or not established, then he may not be around when it comes time to get something fixed.
  • Don't always assume that the lowest price is the best deal. The quote given by an established contractor may tend to be higher, but, if he has a good history, then you'll know his work should be good, and that the warranty, if needed, will be honored.
