1. What to Expect Prior to Installation
- All of the glass and immediate exterior surrounding the window is removed, leaving only the original perimeter frame.
- The fin surrounding the retrofit window is cut to fit the interior dimensions of the existing window frame.
2. Signs of a Good Retrofit Window Installation
- A good sign that a retrofit window has been installed properly is when it fits snugly inside the existing frame, allowing for the frame still to be seen.
- When a retrofit window has been installed properly, there will be no leakage as long as there were no signs of leakage with the original existing frame.
3. Signs of a Bad Window Installation
- The fin surrounding the retrofit window should not be installed over the wood trim of the original window. This can lead to serious problems.
- Water, when it runs down the house, typically slips down behind the wood trim. When a retrofit window has been fitted improperly to the outside of the trim, water can come out underneath the window. This can cause major damage within five years that can cost a lot to repair.
- If you find that a retrofit window cannot be fitted properly into in your existing window frame, then you should give serious consideration to installing a new construction window.
