1. Choosing the Right Window for Your Home
- The type of window you choose depends on what you have in your home: wood or aluminum.
- There are four types of windows: aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass, and wood.
2. Types of Windows
- Aluminum windows are generally used in commercial buildings only. Aluminum can be used for a home but only on the inside.
- Vinyl windows come in only two colors: white and almond. They can be transferred from inside to outside, and stay one color.
- Fiberglass windows offer a variety of colors, including white with a wood grain interior. Fiberglass offers you the option of changing your mind about the color later if you wish.
- Wood windows are usually new construction windows. Installation involves the breaking of stucco and cutting into the siding
- There are a couple of wood models that can be inserted into an existing window frame as long as the windows in the house are already wood.
3. Installation Choices
- Nail on construction means you nail the outer edge of the window into the wall.
- Retrofit installation involves cutting the outer fin of the window to fit into an already existing window frame.
- Block framing uses a block frame window that sets in the frame of the original window. However, the existing frame must be wood. Block frames will not work with aluminum.
